When we begin to feel sick, we get that dreaded feeling don’t we? We know what’s coming.   One of the most common yet most painful symptoms of a cold is a sore throat. A sore throat can be uncomfortable becaussore throate not only is it painful to go about your day feeling the scratchiness and pain when swallowing, but it can even causes difficulties getting to sleep at night.

Unfortunately, many of the over the counter medications available for sore throats leave you feeling foggy and lethargic.  A natural approach to treating this problem may be the answer for you. The use of essential oils can be a solution that not only alleviates your sore throat but helps you live healthier and increases your overall well-being. Essential Oils have even been used to combat laryngitis. For centuries, European singers have known the secret to preserving their voices is with aromatherapy and herbal remedies.

Three of the most effective essential oils for sore throats are:

Tea Tree:  Discovered by Captain Cook on his voyages through the South Seas, Tea Tree oil had been used for centuries by the native Australian people.   Known as an anti-bacterial and antiviral, it has the added benefit of providing a slight numbing action that soothes the throat.

Lavender: Used for centuries as a sedative and antiseptic.  Lavender essential oil contains bactericides and anti-inflammatory properties. Both of them are an important part of an effective natural way of treating sore throats.  Lavender provides a welcome soothing and calming feeling.

Eucalyptus: Eucalyptus is a natural anti-microbial agent. That means it doesn’t allow mold or mildew to build. These can be allergens which create mucus that runs down your throat causing irritation. The Eucalyptus oil helps to block these agents.

The best ways to use these essential oils to help heal your throat is through gargling or by steam inhalations.   Just put a few drops of oil in a glass of warm water and gargle.  For steam inhalation, put very hot water into a bowl with essential oils and breath in the vapors. (It can help to put a towel over your head to concentrate the vapors.)

Along with essential oils, one of our most popular products, Eucasol, containing Eucalyptus essential oil, can be sprayed into the air to soothe your throat when inhaling.

  1. I use tea tree oil in a mixture of warm water and put a small hand towel or face cleaning pad in it and massage my face with it. It works great.
